Bonnie B’s BBQ: The Best Que In LA?

I was told by my former high school science teacher/friend this place was “the BEST!” We drove there on Monday afternoon for a late lunch, get to the door and…it was closed. It was utter disappointment, which caused us to end up at a decent burger joint elsewhere.

This morning I woke up with a craving for BARBEQUE so I took a shower and headed over there with my father. The moment you enter the restaurant you see the walls covered with iconic people of peace and change (Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Ceasar Chavez, Corazon Aquino). Then the smell, there’s a faint sent of smoke that titillates your senses…My stomach begins to grumble. I was greeted at the counter by a wonderfully kind and polite woman. I had told her it was my first time here and I asked her what I should order. She said with no hesitation, “The Ribs.” I ordered the Rib Lunch plate with potato salad, collard greens, and a corn bread muffin.

We sat, the food arrived, and was delivered to us by another incredibly kind woman. Our lunch was placed in front of us and my mouth instantly watered. The portion was perfect, 3 huge ribs and a balanced amount of sides. The pork…oh Lord the pork…It was perfect. There was a smoke ring and the rub was not sweet. The meat was tender and delicious and not so soft that the bone rips right out, it was amazing! The collards were excellently soulful and the cornbread muffin was the best cornbread muffin I have ever had. Ever. It needed nothing but itself, no butter no jam no nothing.

Bonnie B’s is the real deal. All that soulful Southern flavor and hospitality with California sized portions it’s God’s gift to Lake ave.
